Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a collaboration tool for businesses, fully integrated with Office 365, providing a common, cloud-based space for offices to communicate. Teams gives a platform for global, remote and dispersed workforces to work together and share information in real time. Founded in 2018 and now with over 75 million users worldwide, Teams is leading the way for remote workforces, as it is highly user-friendly and suited to businesses small and large. With direct routing, Teams can become a holistic solution to your business’s IT and telephony needs.

It is worth noting that Teams is not always able to fulfil specific and advances telephony needs; BSAS offer a variety of services, so that we can find the best solution for your business requirements.

Teams with Direct Routing

Teams on its own does not give the user connectivity to the PSTN (Public Service Telephone Network), so in order to be able to communicate to the outside world, the user must either purchase Microsoft Calling Plans or use Direct Routing. Calling Plans can be extremely expensive, but BSAS offers an alternative solution, utilising Direct Routing that can save you up to 60% of the cost. BSAS Microsoft Certified SIP Trunks connect directly to your Office 365 account to enable seamless connectivity to the telephone network.

What is Direct Routing?

Direct Routing is the capability of the phone system in office 365 to allow the connection of BSAS SIP Trunks to Microsoft Teams. In the simplest model, the SIP Trunk will connect to the customers current infrastructure using Certified Session Border Controller which can the be connected into Microsoft Teams’ Phone System.

This capability allows the integration of third-party voice applications, meaning there is easy transition to Calling in Teams. Through linking with an existing PBX, users can remain on their legacy systems, while a pilot group can move to Calling in Teams. The ease with which we can transition your users onto Teams allows for a quick and seamless changeover, with limited downtime, which can be completed in stages if required. This allows for the business to have continual functionality while the transition is in process. Call Centre agents can continue to use their application as direct routing enables both to co-exist. If your business uses analog devices, such as elevator phones and pagers, these can also be connected to Teams via Direct Routing. Direct Routing for Teams also allows all call traffic to remain in the organisation.

By utilising Direct Routing with BSAS Microsoft Certified SIP Trunks, you could save up to 60%.

Benefits of Direct Routing for Teams
  • Disaster Recovery- If Teams were to go down, SIP Trunk give the added security of allowing you to manage and direct calls elsewhere. For example, your direct dial-in (DDI) can be forwarded to your mobile phone until Teams is up and running again. Furthermore, as Teams is a Microsoft Platform, you will benefit from their built-in resiliency and recovery, including datacentres with 99.99% resilience.
  • Teams does not have the capability to facilitate calls from Teams to those outside of the Teams network. Without Direct Routing, you will be unable to call anyone who does not have, or is not active on, Teams. Those without Teams are also unable to call in to your Teams network, meaning you would have to maintain a legacy phone system as well as Teams- not ideal from a continuity or cost perspective.
  • Teams does not allow you to export your call logs, however direct routing does open this capability.
  • Where businesses use call recording, PCI compliance is imperative. While Teams does offer a call recording function, Teams cannot guarantee 100% PCI compliance, which Direct Routed SIP Trunks can.
  • Cost saving is probably the biggest benefit of using direct routing with Teams. Direct Routing allows a cost saving benefit of between 20 and 60 % in comparison to Microsoft Calling Plans, with head and handsets around 50% cheaper.
